6 Public Works Professional November-December 2013 IPWEA NEWS Call for abstracts open for IPWEA 2014 Sustainability Conference Mark your diaries! The IPWEA 2014 Sustainability in Public Works Conference will be held in Tweed Heads, NSW, on 27--29 July. Abstract submissions close on 16 December 2013. Over two full days of presentations, panel discussions and networking, the conference will help busy professionals make sense of recent and current sustainability and climate change developments, as well as generate new ideas, useable knowledge and practical measures that can be applied to make a real difference. Held at Twin Towns Clubs & Resorts, this conference is about more than just climate change -- it is about all things sustainability in public works. The sub-themes for the conference will be sustainable infrastructure, sustainable communities, and responding to climate change. The conference organising committee is looking for a range of high-quality papers addressing issues within those sub-themes, including asset management, rating tools, energy effcient street lighting, food and energy security, skills shortages and solutions, capacity building, networking and more. Selected presenters will be notifed by 28 February 2014, with full papers due on 19 May (refereed) or 16 June (non-refereed). Presentations can either be in the form of posters, displayed for the duration of the conference with an allocated author question time, or 25-minute oral presentations at concurrent sessions. Visit www.ipwea.org/sustain2014 to submit an abstract or for more details. 2013 AUS-SPEC update The October 2013 update of AUS-SPEC, the local government speci cation system for the lifecycle management of assets and contract management, is now available. The update is focused on the maintenance-related umbrella work sections of the AUS-SPEC Buildings and AUS-SPEC Urban and Open Spaces packages, which include TECHguides, general requirements, contract schedules and proforma maintenance plans. Bush re design and construction worksections have been signi cantly revised and aligned with di erent state and legislative requirements. Young IPWEA leaders on the rise Young IPWEA NSW Chair and recipient of a 2013 Emerging Leader award Anthony McMahon (pictured) has been appointed General Manager at Boorowa Council. "I am humbled to have the support of council in being given the opportunity to lead a great team of sta , and I look forward to continuing to work with the community," said McMahon, who was promoted from Assistant General Manager and selected from a pool of 33 applicants. Young IPWEA Chair Kim Sedgwick (ARRB Group) was also recently elected to the Board of the IPWEA Victoria Division. Congratulations!
